Mesquite Golf Guide
A golf destination officially "makes it" when the Golf Channel's "Big Break" films a season there. Since Mesquite, Nevada received its season on the small screen, this tiny town, a little more than an hour from Las Vegas, has become a "must play" destination for golfers visiting the region. Located on the banks of the Virgin River, Mesquite delivers seven golf courses, affordable accommodations and casinos in which golfers can risk their greens fees.
Wolf Creek Golf Course has justifiably received a large percentage of the area's golf promotion-and the rounds that such promotion generates. For golfers who forget to bring their A games, this course may be as frightening as the big, bad wolf. But golfers who seek knee-knocking challenges laid out among spectacular scenery will likely ask about Wolf Creek's replay rate.
The Cal Olson-designed CasaBlanca Golf Club plays more than 7,000 yards from the tips and delivers abundant views of the Virgin River Mountains. The Palms Golf Club, Mesquite's first course, serves up two distinct nines: The front side negotiates water hazards but plays fairly flat, and the back nine tackles significant elevation changes and maneuvers over and around desert arroyos.
Course designer Gary Panks could probably play the nearby Las Vegas Strip as a magician, since his ability to perform magic is on full display at Conestoga Golf Club. Parks has managed to make the fairways appear to be green rivers that flow naturally through the desert's geologic features.
The 18 holes at Falcon Ridge Golf Club and the 36 holes at Oasis Golf Club are as deserving of play as any of Mesquite's other courses. In other words, golfers should plan to stay in Mesquite a week.
